Drum-form stools such as this were traditionally used in gardens and outdoor pavilions where upper-class scholars read, wrote, gathered for discussion and, in general, developed their inner sensibilities. This contemporary garden drum was hand-carved from a solid block of limestone with a low-relief design of peony blossoms and meandering vines. Peonies are emblems of springtime and joyous symbols of love, beauty and wealth. The floral design is masterfully carved, traced with a beaded edge and textured with chiseled shading. A pattern of raised dots rings the top and bottom, a design meant to imitate the iron rivets that fasten stretched hide across an actual drum head. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of Seat: 13"
