Human element, Excavation III, 2017Granite and gypsum cementMeasures: 25 x 21 x 75 cm.Edition - Unique work‘Human Element’ is a project that explores the influence material has on the human condition and how our consciousness is derived from our relationship with materials. By using cement and anchoring forms to stone, he wants to create a sense of familiarity and comfort. Through the manipulation of form, balance, and texture, Collin Townsend Velkoff wants his sculptures to convey a feeling of unease and tension which communicates our relationship with materials and our dependency on the environment. For these sculptures, he has developed a sand casting technique that allows him to cast unique cement forms onto organic stone forms buried beneath the sand. After the cement cures the two materials are locked together and the object is then dug out by hand. Stones are selected from nature and construction sites, these stones dictate the shape, color, and forms on the cement pieces that will cast onto the stones. Each piece is unique.Collin Townsend Velkoff Williamsport, PennsylavniaLives and Works in Helsinki,Finland EDUCATION2014-2018 Aalto University - Helsinki, Finland2007-2011 Pratt Institute - Brooklyn, New York SELECTED EXHIBITIONS2018 Sacred Simulations - Galleria Huuto - Helsinki, Finland (Solo, Upcoming) REFORM 18 Design Biennale - Munkeruphus - Munkerup, Denmark A Passing Permanence - Vappan Taiteen Tila - Helsinki, Finland2017 Side Show - Paja & Bureau Gallery - Helsinki, Finland2016 Nothing to Declare - Tulli & Pakkahuone - Helsinki, Finland Noni - Ventura Lambrate - Milan, Italy Näyttely - A-Space - Espoo, Finland Dean’s Circle Exhibition - Aalto University - Helsinki, Finland Mitä Tuli Tehtyä -Näyttelyn Avajaiset - Creat Space - Helsinki, Finland Chair Noir - Stockholm Furniture Fair - Stockholm, Sweden2015 Table Talks - Design Museum Arabia - Helsinki, Finland2011 Playtime - Picaflor - New York, New York Pratt Show - The Manhattan Center - New York, New York2010 Pucci + Paper + Pratt - Ralph Pucci Showroom - New York, New York2009 Glass Exhibition - Kalmar Castle - Kalmar, Sweden PUBLICATIONS2018 TZVETNIK - ‘A Passing Permanence’ A Group Show at Vapaan Taiteen Tila Helsinki - 7.5.20182017 Kristen de la Valliere - Sayhito_Mag - 5.12.2017 La Rocca, Francesca - ‘Design on Trial.
