The traditional metal clad furniture he found in India inspired renowned designer Paul Mathieu to create this elegant and curvaceous storage bench. The arcing sides and top of this piece are hand carved from solid pieces of teak. The hinged lid opens to reveal a removable inset tray. Pattern makers trace and cut complex forms that will cover the bench from thick sheets of copper, brass or white bronze. Once the bench is joined together, it is meticulously encased in a tight fitting skin of white bronze, copper or brass. The metal finish will tarnish over time, but regular non-abrasive household metal polish can be used to restore the original luster. Brass, white bronze, antiqued bronze, silver and copper are the available options for the metal skin. Both silver and copper will tarnish over time. Regular non-abrasive household metal polishes can be used to restore the original finish. We use well seasoned, reclaimed teak and high quality marine grade MDF (wherever technically possible) to avoid and delay the above mentioned changes. However a perfect stability of metal cannot be guaranteed.Please note that our smooth finish metal clad pieces will have some unavoidable tool marks. This is proof that everything is done by hand. The smooth finish will not come out like a machine made perfect surface and the master artisan will do their best to make it look as good/clean/stable/perfect as he possibly can. Our hammered finishes are a much safer option if the tool mark scratches are unacceptable. The hammered finishes are also safer against eventual bubbling/wrinkles due to natural forces as mentioned above.
