Carved by hand from a single wooden log over many months, this series of tables is shaped with a consideration of what the material will allow. Many legs come from the base of the piece, shaped with just enough room for hand tools to pass. With little intention other than to start, a laboured process of subtraction governs the tables figure. The piece is finished with many coats of calligraphy ink. Giving a duality in revealing and concealing. When in shadow the shapes seem simple, almost two dimensional. In light the complexity of the shape revealed in the subtle distortions of the surface.Henry d’ath is a New Zealand-born, Hong Kong-based artist and architect. Using predominantly salvaged material, the artist routinely handworks each piece over many months resulting in lucid, yet ambiguously functional pieces of sculpture. Each work in this current collection is an individual edition in an ongoing series, hand-made by the artist themselves.
