This exquisite Edwardian table dating from the early 20th Century is veneered in satinwood with hand-painted floral garlands and a central display compartment with a glass top. It was filled with dried flowers which is very typical of Victorian turn of the century design. It stands on elegant square tapering legs joined by a lower shelf. The shelf has its own garland design. Lighter woods such as satinwood and airy forms gained favor during this period, as opposed to the heavier, darker mahogany designs of the Victorian era. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the parlor was considered the heart of a household’s social life, and a finely crafted example such as this would have symbolized a wealthy family's hospitality, refinement and social standing.
