Victorian Tiger Oak Side Table With Large Green Man Claw-And-Glass Ball Feet

Chairish

$1,550

This handsome late Victorian tiger oak side table stands out for its exceptional details: a quarter-sawn oak top with serpentine edges, barley twist legs, and dramatic claw-and-glass ball feet. Unlike the more common eagle talon versions, these castings feature a foliate face reminiscent of the Green Man — a symbolic motif of nature and renewal that enjoyed a revival in late 19th-century design. A shaped lower shelf provides balance and utility. Well proportioned at 27.5" square by 30.75" high, the table offers both presence and function, ideal as a lamp table, occasional table, or statement piece in a traditional or eclectic interior. A rare variation of a classic Victorian form, this table is a collector’s piece ready to grace your home. COLLECTOR'S NOTE Claw-and-glass ball feet first appeared in American furniture of the 1890s, inspired by the much older claw-and-ball motifs of Chippendale design. In the machine age, the form was reimagined with clear glass orbs in place of carved wood. The effect was striking, but not without risk — poor fit, stress, or flaws in the glass often caused cracking during assembly or use. This table is even rarer: the castings incorporate a foliate face reminiscent of the Green Man, a symbol of nature and renewal revived in late Victorian design. Surviving intact examples with such distinctive details are especially prized by today’s collectors. #01948JWH
