Well balanced and richly carved, this antique sideboard from Shanxi province is a beautiful example of Chinese cabinetry. Dated to the early 19th century, the long coffer was likely used as both an altar for ancestor worship and as a storage cabinet for clothes, textiles, and other household items. The coffer is embellished with hand-carved decoration and beveled molding along the legs and frame, cloaked beneath a layer of deep brown lacquer. The pierced spandrels depict twin dragons amid swirling clouds and the drawers are carved in low relief with water buffalo and mythical qilin, benevolent protectors of the home. With four drawers and six doors that open to an interior shelf, the impressive coffer provides excellent storage and becomes the focal point of any room.
