English Georgian Revival Mahogany & Satinwood Inlaid Tambour Sideboard, Late 19c

Chairish

$12,000

English Georgian Revival Mahogany & Satinwood Inlaid Tambour Sideboard with Multiple Compartments, Late 19th Century This elegant English Georgian Revival sideboard, dating to the late 19th century, exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and classical restraint associated with the Sheraton and Hepplewhite traditions. Executed in finely figured mahogany, the piece is enriched with satinwood inlay, crossbanding, and line stringing, creating a balanced interplay of warm tones and crisp linear detailing. The sideboard reflects the Georgian Revival idiom associated with leading English cabinetmakers of the period, including Gillows and Maple & Co., without specific attribution. The sideboard is conceived in two parts: a substantial base cabinet surmounted by a removable tambour superstructure, allowing the piece to function either as a formal serving sideboard or as a more architecturally elevated display and storage cabinet. The upper section features three tambour-front compartments—left, center, and right—each fitted with finely reeded roll-top doors, a labor-intensive feature that speaks to the quality of manufacture. Tambour construction of this complexity was reserved for higher-grade cabinetry due to the precision required in shaping and fitting the slats. The lower case is equally sophisticated in its layout. A central long drawer, centered by an oval satinwood inlaid reserve, is flanked by bow-fronted drawer stacks to either side, each fitted with original brass oval plate pulls. Below, an arched central cupboard with paneled doors provides generous enclosed storage, while the whole rests on tapered, inlaid legs terminating in spade feet, lending lightness and architectural clarity to the form. Interior drawers and cupboards are well finished, with shaped shelves and thoughtful compartmentalization, indicating a piece intended for both service and display. The removable superstructure enhances versatility, making the sideboard equally suitable for a dining room, library, or large kitchen interior. Overall, this sideboard is a confident and well-proportioned example of late 19th-century English Georgian Revival furniture, combining aesthetic refinement with exceptional functionality.
