This lovely sideboard is from Gansu province in western China and is finished in a rich, red lacquer. It still features the original paintings, once in vibrant gold leaf but now largely worn down to the darker base beneath. The paintings are of various robed figures standing or seated at tables going about their daily routine. Originally only the centre two doors would have been in place, but what were once fixed panels either side have been converted into doors more recently to add practicality. This would make a lovely storage cabinet or sideboard today, with a warmth and richness that would add impact to any space.
