Both monumental and subtle, the Shale Credenza brings the intricacies of nature’s geology indoors. The wood doors are scored vertically across the grain, and details of a cliff’s facade, mapped out by Simon Johns, are carved into them by hand replicating the textures of its crumbling surface. Patterns within the carving and the wood’s grain create optical illusions depending on the light’s orientation making it as striking from afar as from up close. Due to the hand-carved facade, no two pieces are quite the same. This listing is for the Low version in Grey, 84" long, mirror bas and concealed drawers. Shale is a type of rock formation that tends to split and erode in layers, leaving behind a layered and random composition of textures. The mapping of the composition of this cliff was sketched on to the pieces of the collection, and carved out in layers, with a router and a chisel.
