Large Biedermeier standing desk or writing desk. West German/Rhineland, around 1840. Solidly crafted from cherry wood. An authentic piece of Biedermeier furniture with an elegant design that follows the ideals of clarity, order and utility. It is highly likely that this desk was made for a large German company in the mid-19th century. Furniture of this type was also used in offices for handing out pay packets. Two-part cherry wood body standing on 8 feet. The lower section has two doors in frame and panelled construction, flanking a large open compartment with two shelves. Above this is the desk top with a large drawer flanked by two smaller drawers and correspondingly three sloping writing flaps, as well as a top shelf. In addition, 2 writing boards can be pulled out at the front to provide additional temporary storage space. The openable desk flaps conceal a spacious interior with small compartments and drawers for storing writing utensils, letters and documents. External hinges and fittings in brass. The left door lock, keys and fittings are not original. The following work was carried out on this piece as part of the restoration: Functional restoration of the drawers (runners) and doors, replacements of missing mouldings, replacements to the back panel, addition of a small drawer, drying cracks on the top panel and sides chipped out, surface cleaning, shellac primer, light polishing of the surface followed by a thin wax finish. The furniture can be transported in 2 parts (base cabinet, desk top).
