Antique Japanese bronze Hotei statue. Signed on back of robe. Finely cast with great details and a natural aged patina. Hotei was a legendary Chinese monk who lived around the 10th century. Hotei translates to "cloth sack," referring to the bag he carries which is filled with endless treasures, candies for children, food, and fortunes of those who believe in him. He is distinguished from other Buddhist deities by his happy personality and eccentric wandering lifestyle. In Japan, he was absorbed into the Shichifukujin from the 17th century during the Edo period, where his image proliferated as a symbol of abundance, good health, contentment and happiness. Art and decor featuring Hotei is found across Japan in temples, restaurants, and homes, and serves as a reminder of joy, generosity, and the virtues of a carefree approach to life.
