Inspired by rustic “staked” furniture of the Alps such as simple milking stools, this modern interpretation by Charlotte Perriand (1903-1999) has become an icon of 20th century modern design. Well balanced proportions, solid timber, and understated sophistication make this an appealing and useful piece of furniture as well as a sculptural objet d’art. This particular example displays a rich, warm, even patination and is structurally sound. Timber species appears to be walnut. Piece unmarked, which is consistent with all authenticated/catalogued examples. Literature: Jacques Barsac, Perriand, Un art d'habiter, Paris, 2005, pp. 400 and 405 J.
