1960s Chinese Famille Mandarin Rose Medallion Porcelain Barrel-Form Garden Stool/seat

Chairish

$1,000

This hand painted garden stool depicts in great detail, figures in a garden or court setting, a common motif for export famille rose wares known as "Rose Mandarin" style. Famille rose, literally "pink family" in French, is a style of Chinese porcelain characterized by a palette of opaque overglaze enamels that emphasize shades of pink and rose. The use of opaque white enamel in this style allowed artists to create gradient colors and a more three-dimensional scene. The enamels that are raised on the porcelain and can be felt with the fingers. Traditional classic drum or barrel shape with raised "bosses" (the coral dots) and pierced coin-shaped/medallion cutouts, which symbolize prosperity. Incised numbers on the underside are common on vintage and antique porcelain pieces that are likely a maker's mark or a factory number used during production to identify specific batches or artisan. Beautiful versatile piece that can be used inside or out as a stool or a side table.
