Early B 9/s Bauhaus Canteen Stool By Marcel Breuer For Thonet, 1930s

Chairish

$1,163

Originally designed in 1926 for the Bauhaus school canteen in Dessau, Marcel Breuer’s B 9 stool was a landmark moment in modernist design — an experiment in radical reduction and industrial clarity. This example, an early Thonet production piece from the 1930s, exemplifies the design in its most honest and elemental form. Constructed from two continuous pieces of tubular steel with a bent rectangular profile, the stool features a bold red lacquered seat — likely original. Originally affixed using the pre-Thonet method of screwing directly through the steel tubing and seat sides. Thonet versions replaced this with flange-mounted fasteners, making this variant an early and rare iteration, produced by Thonet but lacking a surviving label. Exceptionally well-preserved in original condition, the stool retains its full chromed surface, with light age-appropriate patina and minimal wear to the seat. A true Bauhaus utility object — unadorned, durable, and enduringly relevant. Ideal for minimalist interiors, museum-quality collections, or as an iconic side stool for any modernist setting. Dimensions: Height: 45 cm, Width: 45 cm, Depth: 39 cm, Tube diameter: 3 cm Condition: Very good original condition. Patina consistent with age; structurally sound. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs, designer records, or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
