Plane Tall Stool by Temper StudioDimensions: D 30 x W 30 x H 65 cm.Materials: Wood.A family of stools in three sizes – bar, standard, and milking – these sculptural stools have myriad uses from occasional seating and bedside tables to striking plant stands. Part of our Plane Collection, they are available in a variety of native hardwoods. Featured here in XX.The Plane Collection takes inspiration from the different expressions of grain found in British hardwoods such as oak, sycamore, and ash. By cutting clean and polished facets into the wood, we’re offered a three-dimensional window into the tree, tracing the grain from a new perspectiveas it moves through each piece individually and the collection as one. By introducing an angular and precise finish to an otherwise rustic but sculptural form, we sought to capture the interplay between the organic nature of the wood and the maker’s contemporary imprint on it. The PlaneCollection gently evolves and encompasses dining tables, stools, and benches of different sizes and finishes. We are George Winks and Katharine Prendergast, the minds and the hands behind Temper. From our studio, lab, and workshop in rural Wiltshire, we design and make idiosyncratic furniture that speaks to our fascination with experimentation, form and materiality. Drawn to the generative space between thinking and making and learning by doing, George’s detailed aesthetic softens the binary between art and artisanship and forms the foundation of Temper’s explorative, process-led approach. We encourage an open-ended, creative process that explores a continuous line of questioning between the material and the maker. Constantly learning from and led by the materials we work with, we move fluidly between problem solving, curating, and making. Through knowledge and play, these learnings are woven and re-woven into every piece we make, forming a unique expression and story of how each and every object comes to be.Nestled in the Wiltshire countryside, our three spaces express the nature of what we do and our values. The studio sits at the heart of Temper and is where our ideas take their original form. The lab encourages us to play, experiment, and evolve those ideas, while the workshop – a characterful forest green Nissen hut – is where we hone our skills and transform our learnings into physical objects. Our work encompasses made-to-order, commissions, and explorative work. We work directly with private clients and on larger projects with interior designers, architects, and contractors, where we enjoy being part of the wider ecosystem of how spaces come together. Everything we make is part of a continuously moving and evolving body of research that feeds into the breadth of our practice.
