What an outstanding Box Bench! The oak and the pine contrast beautifully to create a deep rich warmth perfect for this piece. For most of its length the top rail is flat, only following a curve where it meets the scrolled armrest. The straight bottom rail, with three wide vertical splats, frames two “windows”, each containing five hardwood turned full balusters. The rails and splats are incised with flutes and reeds. The arms/legs are oak and are straight, up to the level of the seat, then they boldly scroll up to the armrest , framing three more full columns as they go. The broad seat is reinforced with two wooden cleats dovetailed into the underside and it lifts on iron strap hinges to reveal a deep storage well, divided into four compartments.
