A rare & monumental antique German Baroque early 18th century dowry chest/coffer, named & dated 1723. The chest of a rare & unusual size, the top with a lift up lid with hand-forged strap hinges. The front of the chest is profusely & sumptuously carved, the chest has four carved panels with the family names; "Adelheit" & "Kosters" and the year "Anno 1723" and the day & month "D7 September". The carved arcaded front with four architectural arches, each one inlaid with a four pointed ebony & walnut marquetry star device, the arches are punctuated with bands of carved rosettes. The chest with a large hand forged iron handle to each paneled end, the chest is raised on a shaped skirt plinth. Condition is remarkably original and condition is very good for a 300 year old chest, it is robust & stable, it can be used for it's intended purpose of storage and is ready to grace your home.
