China trade brass bound black leather covered camphor wood trunk. The top and case are framed by brass corner mounts and brass tacking with a reserve of brass tacking on the center of the lid. The case is fitted with heavy cast brass bail handles with rosette back plates and a brass escutcheon lock plate. The lock is the original after a European model. A faded paper label on the interior is attributed to the workshop of Ashie or Ashoe. For reference, see: "The China Trade" by Carl Crossman. Canton China, made for the Western trade, circa 1820-50.
