This free-standing piece of furniture, entirely in solid oak, features a sloping flap, finely molded on each side, opening on original iron hinges. The interior features four identical drawers, two of which are fitted with functional locks with keys and two with brass knobs only. This space is completed by five compartments and a large lower niche. The chest is locked by two original, functional double-hook locks with brass keys and oval escutcheons. This rare piece of furniture, assembled with dovetail joints, features a bronze handle on each side with a stop for easy transport. The perimeter of the base is embellished with grooved and corbelled molding. with the expansion of international trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, the profession of moneychanger grew in importance. This authentic, high-quality chest, used to lock up instruments used in transactions, banknotes, bills of exchange, precious objects and metals, is the vestige of a profession now modernized by computer technology. ******** Period: Mid-19th century Excellent condition.
