A bold ogee molding is pegged onto the edge of the top of this handsome trunk.. The top lifts on iron strap hinges, to reveal a deep storage well with a lidded candle box on the upper left. The four corners all display delicate exposed hand-cut dovetails. On the front corners these are partially covered by hardwood split balusters and all four have a tapered wooden foot to lift the box off the floor. The front board has two incised faux panels and a nicely mounted iron escutcheon plate between them. The piece has an attractive grain pattern, a warm honey color, and is virtually free of knots.
