This 19th-century American apothecary cabinet or millinery haberdashery top hutch was sourced in Southern Oregon, just outside of Jacksonville, where the Oregon Gold Rush began. With 20 drawers on top in a 4 x 5 configuration and a full-length cubby underneath, it is ready to repurpose as both functional storage and a decorative display piece. The original, worn and rustic black-painted surface patina is intact, with horizontal gold bands and gold-painted drawer pulls, in the iconic palette of the early American West. The drawers slide easily and are clean inside, with tiny remnants of red fabric lining that suggest it was originally built to store delicate items such as a milliner's threads and ribbons or a watchmaker's parts. Two drawers have faint stamped numbers along the top ledges in one-inch increments, which further suggests that it belonged to a seamstress or craftsman. Or perhaps the wood was recycled and reused from a previous measuring unit. The simple yet solid cedar or redwood nail-and-hammer construction is free of any joinery or glue that we have found, reinforcing an early to mid-19th-century, West Coast American heritage. Fix it to a wall or set it on a kitchen or bathroom counter for a beautifully rustic and functional piece of Americana.
