This antique Japanese tansu chest was sourced at an antique dealer in Tokyo Japan. It is a beautifully preserved example of traditional cabinetry, likely dating to the late Edo to early Meiji period (mid–late 19th century). Constructed in two stackable sections, each with two full-width drawers, the piece reflects the functional modular design characteristic of merchant and household storage chests of the era. The chest is crafted from keyaki (Japanese elm), prized for its striking grain and warm amber tone, which is prominently visible across the drawer fronts. The surface has developed a rich patina over time, enhancing its depth and character. Each drawer is fitted with hand-forged iron hardware, including: Large circular lock plates (central escutcheons) Swinging bail pulls with decorative backplates Protective corner mounts and strapping Lower compartment featuring an ornate locking door with elaborate ironwork The bold metalwork contrasts beautifully with the warm wood tones and reflects the craftsmanship associated with regional tansu production.
