A beautifully worn Japanese ko-tansu (small chest) dating to the Meiji period, circa 1868–1912. Constructed of sugi (Japanese cedar) with pronounced straight grain throughout, this compact merchant's chest retains its original hand-forged iron hardware in exceptional original condition — including three riveted locking escutcheon plates with flower-form knob pulls, keyhole fittings, and heavy bale drawer pulls with characteristic forge texture and surface patina. Three drawers slide smoothly and retain original wooden construction. The overall form is rectilinear and honest — no applied ornament beyond the hardware itself, which carries the full visual weight of the piece. The back panel and sides show decades of genuine use, with finish strike-through and surface wear consistent with age and working life. A serious piece for the collector who values wabi-sabi authenticity over polish. Works beautifully as a bedside chest, entryway accent, or desktop object of contemplation.
