Empire or Directoire Continental commode stand circuit 1810 to 1830s. This intriguing example holds a veined gray marble top over a cabinet of nicely grained mahogany. This is centered above a satinwood veneered drawer over a door with flame graining, flanked by so-called elephant trunk supports, which are capped by gilt ormolu leafage. Standing on a molded base with pad feet, the interior has a shelf of white marble to prevent liquids from staining.
