Lorrain (the shade manufacturer) was one of France’s premier glass fabricators for lighting. The bases, as you can see, are signed Sabino, Paris, top of the ladder alongside Lalique! The top surface of the solid brass bases is decorated with a free-form acid finish. The gold finish is somewhat worn and there are places where the lacquered finish has had moisture intrusion; that accounts for the dark spots mostly along the bottom of one lamp base. The pressed glass, frosted colorless shades are size appropriate. (Note: one shade is slightly less transparent than the others. One shade has some small chips on the bottom which are obscured when in position.) One lamp has its original European sockets; the other lamp’s sockets were missing. I was able to retain the two European sockets and put them into service by inserting a “bulb reducer;” this allows the use of American candelabra-based bulbs. I’ve installed American candelabra sockets in the other lamp along with new wiring (each lamp is outfitted, by the way, with a hi-lo switch on the line, clearly visible in the photos). As a result, the new candelabra sockets are slightly higher than the old European ones. No problem, just install different size bulbs and the heights come out almost the same. How handy! I’ll include sets of each size with the lamps, four bulbs altogether. These lamps don’t have any devices for holding the shades in place. Nothing’s needed, gravity keeps them sitting where you see them, and the bulbs will keep them safely in place if someone were to lightly bump them. That said, you’ll probably want to place these lamps in a place in your home where they won’t receive any unwanted physical attention! This pair of lamps is destined for the advanced collector/aficionado! Perfect for a mantle piece, a sideboard, a bookcase, or inside a glass-fronted cabinet. Measurements: each lamp (measured at the shades) is 9 inches wide and 4 deep. They stand 6 ¼ inches high. The bases are 3 ½ by 2.
