Pair antique early 19th century Paris porcelain vases decorated with gardeners now mounted as table lamps. The urns feature hand painted portraits of a genteel couple holding garden implements in a landscape in the tradition of Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette played at being a shepherdess or peasant at the Hameau de la Reine (the Queen's Hamlet), a private, rustic model village built for her between 1783 and 1786 on the grounds of the Petit Trianon at Versailles. Located away from the main palace, she used this retreat to escape court formality, wearing simpler clothing and acting out a pastoral fantasy. The urns feature expert gilding and satyr mask handles at the sides. They are nicely mounted on a faux marble and brass base. Measure 24" tall overall x 6 1/2" diameter. The lamp bases are 4" square at the base. Porcelain vases without lamp mounts measure 8 3/4" tall x 6 1/2" diameter. Good condition - wear to gilding and mounts. Presents well.
