A bouillotte lamp is a table lamp originally designed in the 18th century (around 1770), at the end of the reign of Louis XV, to illuminate gaming tables, specifically for the card game of the same name, Bouillotte. It is distinguished by its adjustable shade, which slides vertically along a central axis of painted or lacquered metal, known as a tôle, usually green or red. Its main function was to provide soft, focused light on the game table without dazzling the players. The base is typically a deep brass or bronze tray originally designed to hold the game's chips and cards. Although it originated in the 18th century, it reached its peak popularity during the 19th century and the Empire period, becoming an iconic piece of furniture for the French aristocracy. Historical figures such as Napoleon I were portrayed using them in their salons. The candle holders have been updated with sockets and a wired lamp, transforming it into a fully functional table lamp that retains its classic aesthetic.
