It is covered in gold leaf; a very thin sheet of gold, usually 22 carats, with various types of gold or imitation gold alloys used to decorate the surfaces (gilding). The solid cream-colored shade is meticulously detailed, square with pure white trim at the edges. It resembles the shape of a shield.
