Mid-Century Modernist Scandinavian Table Lamp By Nils Strinning, Sweden, 1950s

Chairish

$1,434

A rare functionalist mid-century table lamp designed by Swedish designer Nils Strinning in the 1950s and produced by String Design. It features a minimalist base made of plastic-coated metal strings arranged in a geometric pattern. The lamp is fitted with a shade covered in green spun silk textile with a wonderful structure. It has the String Design hallmark engraved in the metal. Swedish designer Nils “Nisse” Strinning (1917–2006) studied architecture in Stockholm during the 1940s. While still a student, he developed a dish rack made from metal strings, which quickly became a major financial success. Building on this achievement, Nils and his wife Kajsa designed the iconic String bookshelf in 1949 for a design competition. This success led to the founding of String Design, a company that launched a wide range of products defined by a clear, functional aesthetic. Strinning received a gold medal at the 1954 Milan Triennale and showcased his work at the 1954 ’Design in Scandinavia’ exhibition as well as the H55 exhibition.
