Mid-Century Tribal Sgraffito Plaster Table Lamp. Bronze Toned, Circa 1960s

Chairish

$565

The mid-century table lamp featured here skillfully bridges industrial production and regional craft traditions with such deft that it could easily be a poster-child for the "Global Modernist" movement of the 1960s.. The monumental, slip-cast chalkware form serves as a canvas for hand-incised sgraffito ornamentation, featuring a stylized tribal geometric register. To achieve visual weight, the plaster body is finished in a multi-layered faux-bronze and burnished umber patina, closely mimicking the textural presence of oxidized metalwork. The silhouette balances an aggressive, organic massing with a disciplined, architectural geometry—positioning the piece at the intersection of Brutalist form and graphic modernism. Aesthetic Attribution: Brutalist / Global Modernist Medium & Technique: Slip-cast plaster (chalkware); hand-carved sgraffito decoration; hand-applied polychrome patina Morphology: Tall, tapered ovoid body featuring a beaded neck collar, deeply recessed geometric registers, and an expanding flared plinth. Condition Report Conservation Status: Exemplary vintage condition. Observations: While large-scale plaster works from this era are inherently prone to structural fracturing and surface loss, this specimen remains remarkably intact. Surface presentation displays only minor, age-appropriate wear to the hand-applied patina, entirely consistent with period residential use and historical aging. Unrestored.
