Andersen began working with metal in the early 1920s, having been trained as a sculptor. His early designs were inspired by the Art Deco style, but he soon developed his distinctive style that blended geometric shapes and handcrafted quality with an organic feel. Andersen was renowned for his hallmark contribution to modern Danish design with the invention and utilizing of the Disko metal alloy. While the precise composition of this alloy is unknown, it is believed to consist primarily of zinc, copper, and aluminum, with other metals added for texture and color.
