Jean Prouve is best known for his angular sheet steel furniture. However, when he designed the Vitra Table S.A.M. for the Solvay chemical company in 1941, Prouve used mostly solid wood (out of necessity due to metal shortages during WWII), with a central Black steel strut. The result is just as beautifully sculptural and structurally sound as his mostly steel pieces.
