19th Century Imari China Porcelain Plate, 1850s

Chairish

$300

Beautiful porcelain plate with imari decoration. On this plate, the background is blue and white, with reserves in which we can observe red flowers and bamboo leaves patterns. Imari porcelain is actually a production site of Japanese porcelain on the island of Kyushu in the province of Hizen. One of the different styles of Imari porcelain found there is the Kirande style, also known as "golden brocade". It can be recognised by the use of three specific colours (cobalt blue, saffron red and white) but also by a particular iconographic register (numerous floral motifs, animal and mineral elements). As Japan was a closed country for three centuries, between the 17th and 19th centuries, and as their imari porcelain was highly prized, China took over the imari motifs for European customers.
