Lastra’s design was inspired by the circular wooden slabs used for centuries to create the outer mold in cheesemaking throughout Italy. When fashioned together with twine, the hoop was left with a slight overlap to help maintain the shape of the cheese mold. Maestro molder Stefano Roselli incorporates the overlapping detail into the entire design, from its foot to its rim. A dark dusting on the edges of each piece suggests the ash that was used to preserve these cheeses and highlights each unique silhouette. Since 1983, Vietri has specialized exclusively in Italian handcrafted ceramics, stainless and pewter flatware, mouth blown glassware, lamps, urns and planters. Families of artisans with 3 or 4 generations of history create these special pieces using centuries-old techniques. The subtle color from a paintbrush and the curving stroke of the artist's hand are never repeated in quite the same way, making each piece truly unique.
