Swallow Pot Nambu Tekki Iron Kettle

Gessato

$300

The Swallow Pot, an iron kettle, stands as a testament to the evolution of Nambu Tekki. Designed in the late Showa period by Akira Kikuchi, the second son in the sixth generation of their lineage, this kettle embodies the aspiration to broaden the appreciation and usage of iron kettles. This exceptional piece, apart from boiling water, doubles as a teapot, thanks to the included tea strainer. Its interior, crafted using the traditional kettle-baking method, is ideal for both boiling water and enhancing iron intake. The inception of the Swallow Pot traces back to when Akira’s wife likened its appearance to a swallow, inspiring its name. At its initial release, this innovative design diverged from the prevailing traditional styles of Nambu ironware and was prematurely discontinued. In this new edition, Oitomi not only replicates the original design but also enhanced it. The kettle now features a picking finished with wipe lacquer by the Marusan Lacquerware Studio, renowned for their Hidehira lacquerware, a prominent traditional craft of Iwate Prefecture. In a significant functional update, Oitomi replaced the conventional integrated iron knob with a wooden one. This innovation, coupled with the exceptional waterproof qualities of lacquer, ensures the kettle remains cool to the touch, offering a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern utility. The Swallow Pot has been honored with the Good Design Award 2021.
