With their strong color-blocking, the Maraca Cushions are an ode to the rich cultural heritage of the Bolívar region in Northern Colombia. In this area, the old manufacturing techniques and methods are still cherished and taught. Among these is the art of building the famous maracas rattles, which the gaiteros use to play ancient rhythms. The cushion covers are made of 100% hand-woven cotton. The cotton yarns are dyed exclusively with natural dyes and then finished by hand. To bind the bright colors, the artesanos use salt and almidon, a natural starch. Just the preparation of all the materials takes three days, while the production of each cushion takes two days. German designer Sebastian Herkner is a long-term collaborator of Ames and has visited Colombia multiple times to experience the country’s cities, nature and people first hand. He also visited many of the ateliers that Ames has partnered with to learn about the unique traditional crafts of Colombia's regions. A sought-after contemporary designer and recipient of many industry awards, he has worked with many international design brands, creating intriguing pieces that showcase his intuition for interesting material, color, and texture combinations.
