Encaustic cement tiles were pioneered by the French in the middle of the 19th century and relied on chemical curing rather than traditional firing. This technique had the advantage of creating a consistently flat and uniform tile. Just as with their clay counterparts, the pattern projects down into the body of the tile and can sustain heavy wear without losing its design -a problems common with modern knock-offs. These tiles are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications; floors, walls and other surfaces. Reclaimed tiles can be expected to show signs of age and use including: small chips, minor color blemishes and variations and grout and mortar residue. This is part of their charm and will not affect long term performance.Tiles are pictured dry and wetted down. 2.25 tiles = 1 square foot.Priced $16 per tile.
