Vintage Korean Mother-Of-Pearl Inlay & Lacquer Box With Inner Tray

$1,200

Chairish

A lovely vintage Korean lacquer box in bright red and decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays circa 1970-80s. The square form box features an auspiciously rendered panel on the top surface of the lid. Within the black rectangular field, MOP inlays was used extensively to depict a pair of flying cranes around a rising sun amidst the floral-head lucky cloud over the ocean waves with rock outcrop and two Lingzi (magical fungus; both crane and Lingzi are longevity symbol). The inlay designs were raised in low relief giving the surface a nice texture. There is an inner fitted tray with a pair of kites with ribbons flying in the sky also rendered with MOP inlays. Corners of the box inlayed outside and painted on the inner tray. Black grossly lacquered interior. The box appears to be made for a wedding present based on the color and symbols. It was marked underneath.
