Dynasty Vase #2 - Water Colored Table Vessel Aluminum Foam By Michael Young

As a new phase of his exploration of working in the medium of aluminum foam, Michael Young has created a new series of vases for Gallery ALL. The Dynasty series will make its global debut at the fifth edition of Design Shanghai, from 14-17 March 2018. Young has been experimenting with the material for a number of years, and this new collaboration has resulted in a unique series of objects. Each vase is a formal representation of a Chinese dynasty. The use of a single material and a uniform height for each of the pieces in the entire series creates a sense of harmony and unity, while all decoration has been replaced by coloration on the natural surface texture.Creating sophisticated shapes with gas-injected aluminum is notoriously complex, due to the structural cohesion of the material and its low melting point. Thus, any attempt to do so has been avoided in the past, and heretofore, the result has been the creation of objects that appeared to have emerged from the deepest heart of the earth, exhibiting an essential link to nature. By embracing the knowledge gained from experimentation in the specializations of surfacing and coloration, the Dynasty series explores new realms of possibilities in form and symbolism. In so doing, Michael Young has designed a new collection of objects recognizable as icons of a rich and durable culture.
