Robert Cherry, a self-taught artist from Placitas, New Mexico creates magnificent turned wooden structures inlaid with natural turquoise. Piece displays intricate light and dark striations that are accented by ribbons of inlaid turquoise. The vessel is truly a sight to behold and as stunning as any museum sculpture. Robert Cherry has been making these beautiful vases for more than twenty years. He begins his creative process with choosing the “perfect” piece of wood, making sure there are defective areas that can be later filled with bright blue turquoise. Each piece is then carefully hand-carved inside and out taking anywhere from 40 hours to one year to complete. The final artistic touch is a robust color and refined hand-buffed finish. It’s hard to believe this is a piece of wood until looking at it for a bit, and notice the spots of raw wood the artist left uncolored. Really a magnificent work of art.
