The vases are sculpted out of monolithic blocks of the autochthonous Alabaster only found in the Volterra region of Tuscany, Italy. The artist has attempted to portray the sedimentary nature of Alabaster and glorify the tremendous amount of time it has taken for geological events to give life to this beautiful material. The Neocene series is a project developed as part of the group "Materie Prime" from Italy with which the artist is affiliated. The group's main ethos is to strategically select artisanal niche sectors struggling in today's current economic landscape; and giving them a breath of new life by creating unique pieces and limited editions. These collectibles aim to appreciate ancient artisanal practices, as in this case the "Alabastrai di Volterra" (alabaster artisans of Volterra) and bring their crafts and practices to the attention of those wishing to help preserve them.
