The precarious and beautifully-involved process is completely unique to Luft Tanaka Studio, and results in truly one-of-a-kind art objects. All pieces are handmade in Brooklyn at Luft Tanaka Studio.Each Kawa piece starts as a sketch on paper. With the assistance of a 3-D modeling program, Luft creates patterns to be cut out of leather. After the leather mold, which can be reused about a dozen times, is sewn and prepared, liquid porcelain is poured inside. As the porcelain sits inside the mold, it forms a thin wall along the leather surface picking up the leather texture and organic form from the flexible leather mold. Once dry, the leather mold is carefully cut open using a seam ripper and delicately peeled off the piece which is then carefully finished by hand.
