1881 Gerrit Jan Thieme German Circus Poster (Green) - 'Circus O. Carré' (Pair)

Chairish

$260

Date: 1881 Size: 11.5 x 16.5 inches (each) Artist: Gerrit Jan Thieme About the Poster: These rare posters advertise a series of shows put on by the Royal Netherlands Circus in the summer of 1881 in front of the Isator, one of the four main gates of Munich's medieval city wall. The shows were headed by Oscar Carré, a Dutch-German entrepreneur, circus director, and the namesake for the prestigious Oscar Carré Trophy. These posters describe the star horses of the show, including Vladimir, a racehorse from Hanover, Mustapha, an Arabian thoroughbred stallion, Corsar and Bijou from Indonesia, the red-haired "tiger stallions" Flick and Flock, and Mahmoud, a stallion descended from a horse gifted to the circus by Queen Elizabeth of Hungary (1854-1898). Posters are delicate and have tears and some staining on the edges. See photos for more details.
