19th c. French original textile design. Gouache on paper. Each design is a one-of-a-kind, hand-painted work. The designs were painted in gouache on a rag paper that has a fine grid printed on it - this is for reading the design to translate it into a jacquard woven pattern. Most have notations on the back with the date, the dyes used, and the customer it was created for. The designs have age and as such, show some toning to the paper and wear at the edges. We carefully clean the surface, and repair any tears with an archival linen tape. The designs are shipped rolled in a tube with tissue protection. This large design is composed of two pieces of paper, one above the other, with a margin that is hidden by the overlap. Dimensions given here are the overall image size, comprised of both pieces.
