Chairish

$1,600

Framed lithograph “Die Mutter” (The Mother) by Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945). Theme is mothers holding their children. Measures overall framed 29” x 23 ½” and print 24” x 18 ½”. Frame is bronze colored metal and double matted. Kathe Kollwitz described as despite the realism of her early works, her art is now more closely associated with Expressionism. Kollwitz was the first woman not only to be elected to the Prussian Academy of Arts but also to receive honorary professor status. Kollwitz's preference for black and white stemmed from its ability to convey stark emotion. Charcoal, in particular, offered her the means to create dramatic contrasts, intense shadows, and smudged textures that amplified the sense of despair and struggle in her compositions.
