This is an original French Art Deco pochoir from a RARE portfolio, “Trés Parisien” dated 1922. It was described as “la Mode, Le Chic, L’Élégance” showcasing the latest of high couture fashion. The pochoir was done on calque (tissue paper) and affixed at the top to the bordered page. Pochoir was a labor-intensive stencil printing technique that was popular in Paris in the Art Deco period. Once the stencil was created, the “colorists” applied color pigments by hand and in layered applications to create vivid accurately colored images. The manual aspect of pochoir was its most valuable attribute while at the same time became one of its greatest failures. It was both labor intensive and time consuming, making it an expensive and slow process of printmaking. As a result, this technique was short lived and was replaced by modern lithography techniques. Thus, pochoirs have become rare and highly collectible with the passage of time. Please note the beautiful draping of the dresses, the use of strong accent orange color, the highlights of white accents, the waist detailing, and, of course, the haristyles, assessories, and the artist signature. The fashion details speak for themselves and are classic Art Deco period styles. Note that the dresses are named for their evening events and descriptions are given as well. Condition is pristine. The slight ripples in the calque result from the drying ink of the pochoir process. This image is 4.75 x 7 ½ inches; the full plate measures 6.5 x 10 inches.
