And All But One Perished Artist: Charles “Earle” Miller About the artist from AskArt: Charles “Earle” Miller (1907-1991) was born on his family’s 247 acre estate, in Downingtown, East Brandywine Township, PA. Little is known about his education/formal art training, but his passion for art had its origins in the family tradition as it was the sole focus of his life. In 1992, Roslyn Hahn of the Hahn Gallery during an interview for the Philadelphia Inquirer commented on Earle Miller’s legacy. Hahn said lithographs Earle Miller did in the 1930s were of such fine quality that he should be ranked with the best of a group of artists who belonged to what has come to be known as the WPA School. “His work was right up there with the best of them … He never got the recognition he deserved.” The evocative power of Earl Miller’s lithographs rival the very best of the WPA body of work in the medium. Earle died in 1991. Earle Miller’s lithographs, though extremely rare, survive in some of the finest museums in America.
