Lawrence Beall Smith (1909-1995) "The Skaters" lithograph on paper, pencil signed. Born in Washington DC, Smith studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned a PhD from the University of Chicago. His work took off when the Whitney Museum in New York gave him a one man show in the early 1940s. This success was started with lithographs like "the Skaters" which was produced in 1939 by Associated American Artists (AAA), an organization started in the Depression that published and promoted artist's work mainly in prints, but also textiles and ceramics. Smith produced over 20 prints for AAA and designed a vase for them Smith painted, made prints and was occasionally a sculptor and his work through the AAA continued through 1972.
