An excellent vintage First Edition period print in full color of Abstract portrait "Der Portugiese" (The Portuguese, 1911) by a major 20th-century French painter, collagist, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor Georges Braque. Comes from a rare First Limited and only Edition art folio published by Albert Skira in Geneva, Switzerland, in the 1940s. Printed on one side of high quality heavy paper. Numbered at the lower right corner: 1. Excellent condition - minor edge wear, never framed. This canvas dates to 1911 and thus belongs to the phase of so-called "Hermetic" Cubism. At about that time, working along much the same lines as Picasso and Leger, Braque determined to see his cubist experiments through to their logical conclusion. The upshot was a sundering, breaking down and complete reshuffling of forms to the point of outright abstraction. He regarded the object as a pure sign clamoring to be wrenched free of accidental tares. With Hermetic Cubism the autonomy of painting, freed of representational service, reached its farthest point of advance.
